6 Living Room Design Ideas and Tips (And What to Consider When Designing Your Space)

Whether you’ve bought your first home or just want to refresh your space, it can be difficult to narrow down all of the different living room designs ideas that pop up when you search the internet. So we’ve decided to share some of our favorite design ideas and tips. Let’s get started.

How Can I Make My Living Room Attractive?

What’s considered attractive is opinion-based and can differ from one person to another, but there are a few living room design ideas that we recommend everyone should consider.

The Layout

There are 3 common living room designs: the floating layout, L-shaped layout, and symmetrical layout. An L-shaped living room area can be a challenging space to decorate. There is often less wall space and you can be limited with how to layout your furniture. You’ll often find the sofa on the long wall and the focal point of the room directly across from the sofa in this layout.

Maybe your living room has a lot of windows. If so, you probably don’t have much wall space. This is when you can opt to “float” your furniture and create an island in the middle of the room. Don’t be afraid to move your furniture around or try out different rugs with this layout.

The symmetrical layout can enhance any shape or size of room. A symmetrical layout allows you to choose between a number of furniture design ideas, including two sofas facing one another, bookshelves on either side of your TV, or a sofa with a chair on each end.

The Traffic Flow

While you could argue this should be included in the previous section, we think it deserves its own. You want to make sure people can comfortably move around your space without becoming crowded by furniture or one another. There should be a clear path for someone to take from one end of the room to the other.

The Lighting

Lighting can change the feel of a room in an instant. If you’re trying to hunker down for a movie night, you don’t want to have to turn on the overhead light just to find the popcorn. And if you’re having a game night, a floor lamp isn’t going to have enough light for everyone to see their cards. Having lighting placed at different levels in different areas of the room will allow you to use the space for a number of activities while also adding a touch of style.

6 Top Living Room Design Ideas And Tips

We’ve created a list of our 6 favorite living room design ideas and tips. If you’re a minimalist, a maximalist, or somewhere in between, we’ve got an idea for you.

  1. Maximize Your Storage Space

Whether your living room is small or large, you can’t go wrong by deciding to maximize your storage space. Living room storage ideas we love are utilizing built-ins and shelves and incorporating living room storage furniture, such as a custom entertainment center, into the room.

  1. Add a Molded Accent Wall

A modern upgrade that is becoming more popular is adding molding to your walls. Some choose to paint the molding the same color as the wall while others highlight the molding by painting it a different color. In general, accent walls of all types are becoming a popular way to add an extra bit of style or a pop of color to your living room.

  1. Choose an Accent Color

Maybe you love neutral colors but are looking for something to brighten up the room without a lot of work. Choosing an accent color is one of the easiest ways to spruce up your living room. You can easily add color with throw pillows, artwork, or draping a blanket over an ottoman or chair. You can also consider mixing in some color into furniture such as customizable accent chairs that can add a pop of color with a neutral couch.

  1. Maximize Seating

If you have a big family or friends group, then finding ways to maximize your seating is going to be a big deal. Luckily, there are a lot of ways you can do this. A stacking coffee table can be used for both smaller and larger crowds. And don’t forget the most comfy way to maximize your seating – customizable sectionals.

  1. Go Green With Your Decor

If your living room has a ton of natural light, then greenery can be an affordable way to decorate your space. There are many houseplants that are low maintenance and affordable. But if you have children or pets at home, make sure the plants you bring home are safe for them. Some common houseplants that are safe for most pets include spider plants, money plants, calathea plants, and air plants.

  1. Choose a Statement Piece

If you’re a minimalist or don’t have much space, choosing one statement piece can really show off your unique style. Your statement piece can be anything – an area rug, a statement mirror or wall art, or even your sofa (especially if you choose a customizable sofa). Whatever you decide on, make sure it represents you and your style.

Where Should I Put My TV in My Living Room?

There are many things that go into choosing the perfect place for your TV. Experiment with different areas in your living room and don’t feel stuck with your original placement. Here are a few things to keep in mind when figuring out just where your TV should go.

The Power Source

Without an outlet, you’ll be staring at a blank screen. And you want to make sure the outlet has enough power supply to handle anything else you might keep on your entertainment center – things like a gaming console, a sound system, etc.

The Furniture

How can you incorporate your TV with the rest of your furniture? Can you surround it with shelves or decorations? Finding a way to incorporate it with your existing (or new) decor will help you create a living room with a natural flow.

The Space

Can you see the TV from every seating area in the room? Do people have to look up to watch television? Ideally, a TV is about four feet off the floor, but depending on the space, that may need to be adjusted. And don’t forget to check if you can see a glare on the TV. You’d hate to be at the best part in a movie and not be able to see anything because of the glare.

What is the Most Important Thing in the Arrangement of a Living Room?

Some people think the placement of the TV is the most important thing about the arrangement of a living room. Others think it’s the lighting. We think it’s knowing the measurements of your room and the pieces you want to include to make it your perfect living room.

Furnishing your home is an investment, and you want to make sure everything you’ve chosen fits perfectly. And having your measurements on hand when shopping can help make sure you only fall in love with pieces that will suit your home.

And you don’t want to forget about measuring for delivery. Have you ever gotten a piece of furniture home and realized you can’t actually get it in your home? It’s not fun. So make sure to measure doorways, staircases, the ceiling height, and more.
