7 Top Furniture Myths: What is True and What Can Be Debunked?
There are many furniture myths out there today regarding fabrics and pilling, style, furniture tip overs, and much more. Some of these are light hearted while others are common misconceptions that are important to know the truth about, especially those concerning furniture tip overs. We always want to make sure our customers are as informed as possible about the furniture they’re investing in and any questions they might have.
While the rumor mill may affect our decision making, it’s important to remember that what’s often repeated doesn’t always mean it’s true. We strive to bring you expert knowledge from our team to help you make educated decisions and bring you peace of mind when you invest in quality furniture and home decor.
Now, let’s dive into these furniture myths and see what’s true and what can be debunked!
Furniture Myth or Truth? Fabric pilling is due to a defect in the fabric itself.
Myth. Fabric pilling is not a defect in the fabric. In fact, fabric pilling most commonly results from other items coming in contact with the fabric on the furniture. For example, it could be fleece pants, blankets, pillows, pet fur, human hair, etc. No manufacturer considers fabric pilling to be a defect. Should you notice fabric pilling, it can be easily corrected by using a clothes shaver and shaving off the pill balls. Shaving off the pill balls won’t do any damage to the furniture or fabric itself.
Furniture Myth or Truth? Comfort wrinkles occur when material has been upholstered incorrectly.
Myth. Comfort wrinkles occur in fabrics and leathers because the material has to be upholstered in a way to allow the leather or fabric to stretch when sat on. This is the correct way to manufacture a piece of furniture. If this process wasn’t followed and a manufacture upholstered the leather or fabric too tightly, over time the seams would tear from the stress of being sat on.
Furniture Myth or Truth? You shouldn’t spend money on furniture if you have kids or pets.
Myth. We hear this a lot. Some people think that if you have young children or pets that you need to buy cheap furniture because your kids or pets will destroy it. However, high quality furniture is built and designed to withstand family life. Investing in quality furniture now actually means saving in the long term, instead of having to replace cheaply made furniture over and over.
If you’re worried about your kids or pets, ask the experts at your furniture store how a certain piece or type of fabric might hold up. Understanding the quality of the furniture you’re purchasing can give you peace of mind. There are also fabric warranties available that will cover many normal staining scenarios.
Furniture Myth or Truth? There are style and design rules to follow.
Myth. Of course, there will always be ideas and guidelines about furniture and how you should or shouldn’t design your home. However, it’s important to remember that these are all opinion-based. Sure, there are basic rules and guidelines to follow for space planning, but remember that every home, style, and personality is unique.
We believe you should design your furniture and home for you. At Room Concepts, we provide high quality, customizable furniture that is American made and designed to fit your style. Furniture Myth or Truth? All Wood Furniture Is Created Equal.
Myth. Did you know that different types of wood actually have different characteristics and qualities? Being informed about the type of wood the furniture you’re considering is made of is important. For example, oak (red oak) is the gold standard of hardwood furniture. It’s very solid and is known for its durability and features an “open” attractive
grain that you can actually feel. In comparison, pine is a softer wood and is less expensive. Make sure to do your research before you buy and ask the experts about the type of wood at the furniture store you’re shopping in to find the right type of wood for your needs and style.
Furniture Myth or Truth? Dressers, bookcases, and other bedroom furniture are too heavy to tip over with kids.
Myth. Yes, dressers, bookcases, and similar bedroom furniture are heavy, but children are notorious for opening the drawers of a dresser or using bookcase shelves as steps. When kids do this, they make the furniture top heavy and it is more likely to tip.
However, rest assured that there are new anti-tip laws being put in place this September 2023. The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken further action to protect consumers from tip-over-related deaths and injuries associated with dressers, armoires, wardrobes, and other clothing storage furniture. Manufacturers are now facing mandatory safety standards to protect young children from injury and death from furniture tip-over incidents. By the Fall of 2023, manufacturers and furniture stores should have all new bedroom furniture inventory that follows these anti-tip safety standards – including Room Concepts.
