Where Our Furniture Comes From: Sourcing Sustainable & Quality Products

how to find sustainable furniture

When shopping for furniture, most customers naturally focus on what they can immediately see: the style, the finish, the fabric… or the price tag. But some of the most important decisions happen long before a piece ever reaches a showroom floor, and the results of those decisions, while not always initially visible on the product itself, have significant long-term implications for not only the product and your wallet, but your community and environment as well.

Where furniture comes from, how it is built, the materials used, and the people who make it all play a role in determining whether that piece will still be serving your family years from now, and its potential environmental impact if not.

At Room Concepts, our furniture sourcing processes are not simply about finding products to sell. It is about building relationships with manufacturers who share our values of quality craftsmanship and responsible production, utilizing long-lasting materials and maintaining pricing that is honest and fair. Every collection we carry at our furniture design store is carefully selected to provide customers with furniture that is beautiful, customizable, and built to last.

What Makes Furniture Sustainable?

The answer to the question of what “sustainable” furniture is goes far beyond recycled materials or environmentally-friendly finishes – although it does include those factors. Sustainable furniture is furniture that is designed, built, and sourced in ways that minimize waste, conserve resources, and maximize product longevity. Rather than creating cheap, fast-trend products that need to be replaced every few years, sustainable furniture is made to serve generations. This saves money for customers in the long run, and it also prevents cheap furniture items (which often aren’t constructed from fully recyclable materials) from ending up in landfills.

Several factors which contribute to making furniture sustainable include durability of materials, responsible wood sourcing, quality construction, reduced transportation impacts, and timeless designs that encourage long-term use.

Durable Materials

Furniture that lasts longer requires fewer replacements. Solid hardwoods such as oak, maple, cherry, and walnut can endure decades of everyday use, reducing waste and preventing furniture from ending up in landfills.

Responsible Wood Sourcing

Many sustainable furniture manufacturers use wood harvested from responsibly managed forests. Sustainable forestry practices help maintain healthy ecosystems, protect wildlife habitats, and ensure forests remain productive for future generations.

Manufacturers committed to sustainable wood sourcing may specifically use wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which verifies that raw materials are coming from controlled forest management. Organizations like PEFC also work to validate sustainability standards throughout the production process.

Quality Construction

Joinery methods, craftsmanship, and attention to detail all contribute to a piece’s lifespan, and they matter nearly as much as the materials used. Not only will they hold together better against daily use, but well-built furniture can often be repaired, refinished, or passed down rather than discarded.

Reduced Transportation Impacts

Furniture manufactured closer to home often requires less transportation and allows for better oversight of materials and production practices. For instance, 80% of all furniture we sell at Room Concepts is produced within a 5-hour drive of the Pittsburgh market.

Timeless Design

Sustainable furniture also tends to prioritize classic styles over short-lived trends. Pieces designed to remain attractive for decades naturally reduce the cycle of buying and replacing furniture.

Choosing sustainable furniture benefits both homeowners and the environment. Instead of purchasing furniture that may need replacement after only a few years, invest in pieces that offer long-term value, reduce waste, and create healthier homes by avoiding materials that emit formaldehyde or VOCs.

How We Source Furniture for Quality and Sustainability

So, how do we make sure the brands we partner with align with our values regarding sustainability and everything else?

At Room Concepts, sustainability begins with quality. Furniture that lasts longer, performs better, and can be enjoyed for decades is inherently more sustainable than furniture designed for short-term use. To maintain this, every manufacturer we work with must meet several important standards.

North American Manufacturing

All Room Concepts furniture is manufactured in North America, with the majority produced in the United States and several trusted partners located in Canada. Keeping production closer to home provides several advantages to customers, and it makes it easier for us to meet our sustainability goals.

What are some benefits of strictly keeping to North American made products?

  • We are allowed greater oversight of manufacturing practices.
  • Our manufacturers offer more transparency regarding material sourcing.
  • Transportation distances are reduced.
  • Higher labor and production standards are required by national laws.
  • Communication with manufacturers and customers is accelerated.

By keeping to mostly domestic products, we are also more easily able to build lasting relationships with the people who make our furniture. This is especially important when it comes to partnering with Amish builders, as you’ll see later in this post.

Solid Wood Construction

One of the most important requirements for our wood furniture is solid wood construction. We do not carry furniture made from particle board, MDF, or low-quality veneers. While these materials often reduce upfront costs, they typically have shorter lifespans and can be more difficult to repair.

What are some advantages of solid wood furniture?

  • Greater sturdiness and durability
  • Longer product lifespan
  • Better repairability
  • Surfaces are able to be refinished
  • Unique natural wood texture and character
  • Higher recyclability potential for components

Wood species such as oak, maple, cherry, and walnut each bring their own appearance and performance characteristics, allowing customers to choose pieces that fit both their style and their needs.

Although solid wood furniture lasts for many years and can often be passed down or donated rather than thrown away if you are ready to replace it, the time may still eventually come to dispose of it. When this happens, its components may be dismantled and then repurposed or recycled more easily than furniture made from cheaper products. Contact a specialized furniture recycler to ensure that your furniture is being disposed of in the proper way.

Built to Last

The average furniture replacement cycle has become increasingly short as many imported products are built to be disposed of. Many lower-quality pieces begin showing wear within only a couple of months to 2 years, and while we will acknowledge that there are many frugal customers who continue to use their furniture as long as possible (even if it is no longer in prime condition), many modern buyers are purchasing fast with temporary intent, and they will just as quickly discard their cheap furniture products once they start to look shabby.

At Room Concepts Furniture, we intentionally only seek manufacturers that build furniture designed for long-term use. Strong frames, quality materials, durable finishes, and repairable construction all contribute to furniture that can remain in a home for decades and may even be passed down to future generations. Longer-lasting furniture reduces waste while providing better long-term value for homeowners.

Extensive Customization

Another important part of our sourcing process is design flexibility. We believe customers should not have to compromise between quality and personalization. The manufacturers we work with offer a wide range of wood species, color finishes, fabrics, leathers, sizes, configurations, and hardware options – all resulting in distinctively unique furniture pieces.

This room for customization allows customers to create furniture that fits their homes and lifestyles rather than settling for mass-produced pieces.

Reasonable Value

Quality also does not have to mean paying the highest price possible. While the principle generally holds that you get what you pay for, not all high-quality furniture needs to be outrageously priced. When evaluating manufacturers, we look for companies that provide excellent craftsmanship at a reasonable price which creates value. We avoid products that are unnecessarily expensive while also steering clear of lower-quality options that sacrifice durability for a cheaper price tag.

Our mission as a furniture business has always been very simple: to provide the best quality furniture at the best possible prices, giving the consumer the best value.  We do this by avoiding companies and manufacturers that put a premium price on their brand name, like La-Z-Boy, Flexsteel, and other designer brands. You are paying a premium for the names of brands like these, and often there are better quality products available at lower prices.

Every Manufacturer Offers Something Unique

We do not believe in carrying multiple manufacturers that offer essentially the same product. Rather, for every distinct need we can meet, we seek to find a furniture vendor that is best suited to provide the appropriate product at a reasonable price.

Here are a few of our partners, and what sets each apart:

By carefully selecting manufacturers with unique strengths, we can offer customers more meaningful choices without overwhelming them with options.

How to Find the Best and Most Sustainable Amish Furniture

Many customers ask where Amish furniture comes from. Authentic Amish furniture is primarily produced by Amish craftsmen and family-owned workshops located throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. These builders often rely on traditional woodworking techniques, hand craftsmanship, and solid hardwood construction.

Although many Amish furniture designs align with the timeless, traditional styles associated with the Amish culture, it is not limited to these aesthetics, as most of our Amish builders produce modern and transitional styles as well. Over the years, as our relationship with our Amish builders has grown, we have taken many of our own designs to these partners and had them built for us specifically, broadening our portfolio to include looks that are not what most would consider traditional Amish furniture. This allows us to offer our customers Amish quality and custom options without those distinctive “Amish” looks.

At Room Concepts, our approach to Amish furniture focuses on finding smaller builders that align with our values as a family-owned business. Let’s dive into what that looks like.

Authentic Craftsmanship

Unfortunately, not all furniture labeled as “Amish” is built entirely by Amish craftsmen. Some larger manufacturers may borrow elements of Amish design, or outsource portions of production to the Amish – yet still claim the furniture is “Amish made.” Contrary to this approach, we look for smaller builders whose work genuinely reflects traditional Amish craftsmanship and woodworking practices.

Small Family Businesses

Many of our Amish partners are small shops that share our commitment to quality, relationships, and personalized service. You will find different, smaller-volume builders featured in our stores than what is available in other larger Amish furniture retailers in the area.

Besides being better suited to match sales volume needs as a small business ourselves, working with smaller builders allows us to offer furniture that is fully authentic while supporting independent craftspeople and their communities.

Solid Hardwood Construction

Authentic Amish furniture is known for its use of solid hardwoods and traditional joinery techniques. These methods create furniture that can often be repaired, refinished, and passed down through generations, making Amish furniture one of the most sustainable furniture choices available anywhere. As we’ve already discussed, solid wood furniture is a non-negotiable commitment for our business, and so we have always loved the materials and production transparency involved with Amish furniture.

Is plywood ever used in Amish furniture?

One important distinction many people don’t realize with Amish furniture and solid wood is that the Amish will use “plywood veneers” at times in areas like sides of cabinets, dressers, etc. The reason for this is because due to the expansion and contraction of solid wood, the plywood veneer actually provides more durability in this respect than a true piece of solid hardwood can.  When you hear the term “veneer” with most other furniture, it is usually veneer over MDF or pressed wood. This is completely different from veneer over plywood and nowhere near as durable. The Amish still consider this “solid wood” because plywood is all 100% wood; it is just cross-layered, which makes it more durable for certain aspects of furniture design where a solid panel would be more susceptible to cracking. The ultimate result is still solid wood, and it performs even better than a piece just constructed of solid panels might.

Customization Options

Customizability is also integral to the products we carry. Many Amish builders offer extensive customization options, allowing customers to choose everything from wood species to finish colors, specific dimensions, optional hardware and design details. This level of personalization ensures that furniture fits both the customer’s home and their long-term needs.

Attention to Detail

It’s more than just solid wood construction. When evaluating Amish furniture, we look for such details as consistent craftsmanship, quality joinery, and smooth finishes. These details help distinguish truly handcrafted furniture from products that simply imitate the Amish style.

We also prioritize working with reputable builders with transparent manufacturing processes so as not to compromise on our values.

Why Sustainable Furniture Is Worth the Investment

Finding sustainable bedroom furniture, dining furniture, or living room furniture is not simply about following eco-consciousness as a trend. Rather, it is about investing in pieces that provide lasting value to your household, and furniture built from quality materials, crafted by skilled makers, and designed for decades of use often manages to cost less over its lifetime than furniture that requires frequent replacement.

At Room Concepts Furniture, our sourcing process is guided by a simple philosophy: if we would not bring it into our own homes, we will not bring it into our showroom. By partnering with North American manufacturers, supporting smaller family-owned builders, emphasizing solid wood construction, and prioritizing long-term value, we help customers furnish their homes with confidence.

If you are looking for sustainably made furniture that combines quality, customizability, and value, we invite you to visit either of our design store showrooms in Wexford and the South Hills of Pittsburgh, where you will experience a more personal approach to furniture shopping than anything you would find at a big box store. From bedrooms and dining rooms to living spaces and home offices, our carefully selected collections are designed to help your home look beautiful today and for many years to come.
