Updating a Room with an Area Rug

A great room is a gathering space for family and friends. A dining room is a space where you share a meal and tell stories about your day. A bedroom should be a serene, relaxing space to unwind and unplug after a long day. Let’s spruce up these rooms with a beautiful area rug! Here’s how.

First, the Furniture

We have lots of bedroom suites, dining sets and family/living room pieces to choose from if your current furniture is worn out, outdated, or a combination of mismatched hand-me-downs. We are happy to help you browse and select updated, custom, high-quality pieces.

Next, the Area Rug

Whether you are working with your current furniture or buying new pieces, adding an area rug is a great way to enhance the design and beauty of a room. You can find inspiration in design magazines and shows, furniture stores with staged rooms, home shops, and specialty rug stores. Pinterest also has countless images that can help guide you on your area rug preference.

First, examine the space you have in the room. Make sure you measure the area to know what size rug you would like to purchase. If you’re in between a size, always size up. The bigger the rug, the better so long as it’s not covering your whole floor.

Then, assess the colors in the room to determine if this will be a subtle accent design element or a focal point of the entire room. Shop around. Remember, if you plan to shop online you may find great deals; however, the color may not be accurately represented on a screen. Take that into consideration during your shopping process.

Area Rug Pro Tips

  • Assess the part of the furniture that will be placed on the rug. For example, a great room area rug can be purchased large enough for all of the furniture pieces, or, large enough just for the front legs of all of the perimeter pieces, or, large enough just to contain the coffee table. Each look is stylish so it just depends on your design preference.
  • Remember, if you are doing reclining furniture, a storage bed, or any other piece that needs to remain level to function properly, the entire piece should be on or off the rug. Having part of the furniture on and part of it off can cause drawers to open, not line up and/or function improperly.
  • If you have a dining table that is circular, try putting a circular area rug underneath of it. Regardless of shape, all furniture legs of the dining table and chairs should be on the rug.
  • Use painters tape to design the border of the rug. This will give you a realistic visual of what the rug will look like under your furniture.
  • If you have pets, that is one more influential factor to keep in mind. Choosing a rug that can be easily cleaned of pet stains is important to the longevity of the area rug.
