Tips for Hanging Pictures and Wall Art

You just purchased new furniture from Room Concepts and need some new wall art. While this part of the design process may seem easy, there’s actually a lot of thought that should go into hanging a piece on the wall. We’re here to give you tips on hanging pictures and wall art!

Assess the Wall Space

Is the wall you will be hanging artwork on large, small, or tall? Assess the space you have and make sure you fill it appropriately. If you have a very large and tall wall, consider purchasing multiple pieces that are larger. Don’t be afraid to decorate up as it’ll make the room look larger. Mirrors also have a remarkable ability to open up your room.

Measure Twice, Cut Once

Have you ever heard of the saying “measure twice, cut once”? This tip holds true for hanging pictures and wall art too. The last thing you want to do is hang the piece and step back to admire your handiwork only to find that it’s not quite right. Make sure you evaluate the width and height of the wall space. Did you know that pictures should be hung at eye level? Most people hang their pictures too high so keep that in mind when assessing the height.

Additionally, consider these questions when measuring:

  • Will you be hanging the piece in a stud or drywall?
  • What hanging mechanism is on the back of your artwork? Wire, one or two hanging rings, nothing?
  • Are you hanging one or multiple pieces on the wall?
  • Do you want a picture centered on the wall or centered over a piece of furniture?

Use a Level

After you’re done measuring, but before you begin to hammer, etc., use a level to make sure your piece is not lopsided. Sometimes, asking for help to do this task makes it easier.

Hanging Your Piece(s)

Now that you’ve measured and made sure your artwork is level, you’re ready to hang. Assess whether nails, drywall screws or anchor wire hooks would work best. Typically, anchor wire hooks can hold up to 50 pounds which makes them ideal for hanging heavier pieces directly in the drywall. They are quick to install and easy to adjust (in case you only measured once and you notice you’re a little off). If the piece you are hanging is heavy, ask for a second set of hands!

Admire Your Work

Confirm the wall art is level and then step back and check out your impressive hanging technique. Be proud of your accomplishment and how beautiful your room looks.
