The Current State of the Furniture Industry
Customer Questions
Here at Room Concepts, we are continuing to receive lots of questions on the state of the furniture industry in regards to the nationwide manufacturing delay. We continue to be excited to help our clients choose their next great piece of furniture and we are working hard to balance these fulfillment delays, which are currently happening across the entire furniture industry. Regardless of which furniture store you choose, there continues to be drastic delays in fulfilling orders. At Room Concepts, we are in close daily communication with our manufacturers so that we can continue to share any updates that we can.
Manufacturer Delays
Some manufacturers have improved their lead times over the past six months and others have increased their lead time. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, our typical lead time was 6-8 weeks on custom furniture. Currently, our delivery estimations are ranging from 14-24 weeks, depending on the manufacturer you choose. This is partly because manufacturers are having challenges securing the various fabrics and supplies needed to build the furniture mixed with record high sales volumes and backlogs at their factories.
Why is This Happening?
We are finding that many people have decided to invest more money into their homes, since it has been the place where most of us have spent even more of our time this past year. This is happening at a volume we’ve not seen in a long time. Consumer spending has increased for furniture, home remodeling, decks, pools, etc. All these industries and suppliers are seeing record business and interest. Consequently, it is taking longer than normal to order and receive furniture and/or get on service schedules.
Communicating Delivery Times
We are trying to help our clients by providing the most accurate information at the time of the sale and also following up throughout the process to keep you informed of any delays or changes. We work hard to communicate with our clients regularly, even in times when delays are unforeseen (such as, the extreme freezing temperatures that occurred in Texas this past February). Following the storms in Texas, our Living manufacturers were delayed by about eight weeks because of the foam supplies shortage. Customers who were given a delivery time of 12-16 weeks in January (or prior) have been delayed to 20-24 weeks. While we try our best to give accurate timelines, it is important for customers to realize that the furniture industry is stretched to the max right now and any additional challenges can really impact lead times more so than any other periods we’ve faced in the past. Likewise, we’ve continued to allow many floor models to be sold and delivered right away to help those customers who are unable to wait 14-24 weeks.
