5 Ways to Get Rid of Old, Unwanted Furniture

You are ready to purchase new furniture but don’t know what to do with your old pieces; this is a common dilemma. Most new furniture stores do not remove old pieces due to liability, but here are five helpful tips to get rid of the old and make room for the new.

  1. Repurpose and Reuse

Depending on the pieces you are replacing, they may be useful in another room of your house. See if you can repurpose and reuse your old pieces elsewhere.

  1. Donate

Donating your unwanted furniture is a fantastic and charitable way to get rid of your old pieces. We have always recommended the Vietnam Veterans of America and St. Vincent de Paul for donating furniture. It’s important to note that with regard to the pandemic, some places are not taking as many items. We recommend that you call the organization you want to donate to and inquire about their COVID policies.

  1. Sell on Facebook Marketplace

On Facebook Marketplace, you’ll find many people who are willing to take your used items away for free or for a very low cost. In most cases, a buyer will pay you for your unwanted furniture. These exchanges can be contactless (i.e. “porch pickups”), which you can note when listing your used furniture on the online platform. We recommend using credible payment applications, like Venmo and PayPal, if you are opting to receive payment for your items.

  1. Ask a Neighbor or Post in Your Neighborhood Online Group

Another great way to get rid of furniture is to ask your neighbor if they, or someone they know, can use it in their home. If you’d like to spread the word even farther, search for a Facebook Group that includes people who live in your neighborhood and/or surrounding area(s).

  1. Have a Garage Sale

We think Facebook Marketplace is a much easier way to get rid of furniture; but, if you have lots of items you want to purge, try holding a garage sale. Anything left over can be donated!
