Matching Paint or Wallpaper with the Furniture and Style of Your Room

You just purchased new furniture from Room Concepts and have several weeks before delivery. Do you want to update the paint or wallpaper in the room but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone! Selecting the best paint color or wallpaper can be overwhelming. An eye for design doesn’t come easy to many of us so let us guide you through this process. Here are some decorating tips that will help you design an updated room that fits your style!

Questions to think about:

  • What is the room’s purpose? Answering this question will help you determine the style. If you are updating a bedroom, do you prefer simple decorations with light walls to compliment the dark furniture you just purchased? Or would you prefer darker walls which will invite a sleepier atmosphere at bedtime?
  • What’s the overall style of the room? Simplistic, bold, modern, light, dark, etc.
  • Do you want to add a pop of color to offset any neutral furniture?
  • Will there be an accent wall?
  • What about an accent ceiling?
  • What color is your trim and doors?

The answers to the above questions will help you determine your overall theme for the room.

Wallpaper and Paint, How to Choose?

Just like when you’re purchasing your furniture, pattern, color and style are important! This same notion applies to your wall design.

Wallpaper

  • Avoid small patterns if you want to streamline the process of installing wallpaper. Matching small patterns can be extremely difficult. That’s why it’s a good idea to select larger designs or even simplistic designs that don’t require exact repetition.
  • Beyond the actual pattern of the wallpaper, you’ll also have to decide if you want to go with a flat or textured look. Flat wallpaper usually offers more detail such as metallic or gloss embellishments while textured wallpapers help cover underlying imperfections on the wall.

Paint

  • Paint and wallpaper can work well together. Pick an accent wall and choose a bold wallpaper design with a lot of character. Tie in your new furniture and choose accent pillows that match the color of the wallpaper. Select a neutral paint color for the remaining three walls. This look is bold, modern and beautiful.
  • Pick an accent wall and paint it a different color. For example, let’s say you’re updating a media room. Choose a dark, deep blue color for the wall with the TV. Sticking within that same blue color pallet, choose a lighter blue for the remaining three walls.
  • Choose one paint color for all four walls. If your furniture is neutral, choose a color that will make your furniture pop. If your furniture is darker, choose a neutral color that will draw the eye to your new beautiful pieces!
  • Does your room have a vaulted ceiling? If the vault is smooth and non-textured, paint it! Match the paint to the color of the walls to make your room look taller and elegant.

Pay Attention to Light

Does your room have a lot of natural light or do you rely mostly on ceiling lights or lamps? Take note of the room’s light source and find a wallpaper design or paint color that compliments the space.
